October 2018 Newsletter

Oh hands up who is loving the cooler temperatures? It has been a challenging summer but of course we shall ave some excitable weather through the next few months.

14 of us went to the Nordic Walking Festival in Purbeck in September. There were over 160 walks and workshops to keep us busy over the three months. Three members took part in the 16 mile challenge and came in at an amazing time. Well done Carla, Debbie and Katie. Photos were uploaded to not just our Facebook page but NWUK so please do have a look. Next year the dates are 13th-15th September and early bird tickets have now been released. If you are thinking of going then do book accommodation sooner rather than later. We shan’t be doing an en-masse booking for one Bed and Breakfast as it was difficult to cater for the different arrival times and a few other logistics.

For October we also have an After Work 6pm Taster and Fast Track session, at Prospect Park.

We shall be adding in a few new walks over the next few months so keep yours peeled! But especially for October Half term we have a Family Walk. We have also added in a three special walks for December; Oxford Christmas Guided tour with Christmas market and lights, our Christmas Lunch and our new year Butty and Mulled Wine Walk.

Please do read our feature blogs as they tie in with our themes that help to keep you inspired and motivated to continue to get stronger, sleeker and younger with Nordic walking.

Congratulations to Carol and Debbie who have complete their Walk Leader course and are now accredited NWUK Walk Leaders. Their support means we can continue to grow our Thatcham and Newbury walks. They shall be out recce’ing new walks this October and we shall add them to the diary as soon as possible.

Be bright, be safe, be seen.

Yes, you have heard us mention this once or twice and of course it is in our walk scripts. For our evening walks please do make sure you are wearing a hi viz vest, hat or arm bands (no, not the swimming ones). This is also useful on day time walks when we snake about along paths; you can all be easily spotted.
Lights are now essential on ALL evening walks. Either a head torch or adding bike lights to your poles. These can be bought quite cheaply either online or in Decathlon. Most of the paths we use are well lit but there are occasions

when we through darker spots. We are also drawing attention to ourselves so we are very visible which is not just for safety but also reduces our risk of being vunerable.

An questions, please do speak to Janine or Maria.

Come along and feel the magic of Nordic Walking.

Please register and book on in advance. We supply the poles; just wear clothing appropriate for the weather and decent grippy soled shoes.

Our October challenge is in just 2 weeks, 13th October and we would love to see more people joining in. The route and timings have been changed as more of you wanted a 12 mile challenge.

Your participation will help make a huge difference to someone with Parkinson’s as we are investing in their smiles by purchasing the special poles that help to Nordic walk with all the benefits. In particular strengthening coordination, balance and stability which are often the main key functions that deteriorate.
This helps promote wellbeing, independence and confidence.

Be part of some one’s story to share the adventures again. Read more>>

Ros shared the idea that you could also gain sponsorship to offset against your entry fee, helping spread the smiles further.
