As all golfers know, a game of golf is both mentally stimulating and physically challenging. Golf may not be considered a physically demanding sport, but one round will likely mean you are outside and moving around, walking at a pace of 6-7km, for several hours at a time and constantly using your brain for the many mental challenges you face. There are many stated health benefits of golf, from scientific and anecdotal sources, but just how good is the game for the body and mind?
“If you walk 18 holes three to five times a week, you’ll get an optimal amount of endurance exercise for your heart. If you pull your clubs or carry them, you’ll burn even more calories each round and benefit even more.”
Playing golf regularly can help you:
- stay fit
- improve muscle tone and endurance
- lose weight and body fat.
- It’s a great way to keep in touch with friends
- help in reducing stress (as a result of the physical activity and also due to the pleasure of walking in an open and natural environment)
- provide opportunities to meet new people
- help develop a sense of community and unity.
Ok, so what has that got to do with Nordic walking? Consider the similar benefits –

*Improving back and postural issues
*Loving the new friends and social element of outdoor fun

It’s a sustainable exercise that fits in with agenda; everyone has to walk somewhere.
But that’s only part of the story for some of our golfing members. Two husbands, who play golf through the summer, joined their wives to learn to Nordic walk during the dark winter evenings. Of course, we were outdoors with head torches and all that Mother Nature could throw at us. After Easter this year, when the boys went back to their golf after work, the wives shared with us that because they were keeping their upper body strong with the Nordic walking technique, they went back to their golf game the same strength as they had at the end of summer, and which they usually lose over winter! Smashing those league tables this year!

Nordic Walking with 3J Fitness
I took up Nordic Walking in January 2017. A friend told me about it as I was complaining about running with the ongoing issues with my knees. I was also looking for an activity which I could continue for many years – being in my early fifties.
I immediately took to Nordic Walking. I was really impressed with Janine’s approach – she is an enthusiastic and highly supportive instructor who enables everyone to develop at their speed. Being a keen golfer and being pretty fit, even if I would like to lose some weight, I was able to progress at a speed which kept me interested. From expecting to do one session a week, I am now doing 2-3 evenings a week.
The biggest surprise to me has been the knock-on effect on my golf. This year, I am now driving the ball at least 10-15 yards longer. Several of my golfing friends have now started to say “if that is the effect of Nordic Walking – maybe they should sign up”.
I would strongly recommend Nordic Walking to anyone who wants to get fit or get fitter or surprisingly to improve their golf distance.
